The Odia script evolved from the Brahmi script and is characterized by its rounded shapes, a result of writing on palm leaves. Odia has a rich tradition of poetry, devotional works, medieval literature, and modern novels. Famous writers include Sarala Das, Upendra Bhanja, Fakir Mohan Senapati, and Gopabandhu Das.
